Press release from the Swedish Academy

During the summer and early autumn the Swedish Academy has continued its efforts in re-establishing trust for its activities and the legitimacy of the Nobel Prize for Literature. Vital to this reconstruction has been to produce a modern interpretation of the 1786 Statutes of the Swedish Academy with the help of legal expertise to achieve consensus on their application in today's world.

This work has now been completed and at yesterday's Academy meeting a codicil to the Statutes was added to provide a firm foundation for future activities. Crucial was a clarification of the loyalty obligations of its members to the Swedish Academy and clear directions for how to address questions of removal of members. Additionally, it was decided to complement the 2012 guidelines for conflict of interest issues with the recognition that all Academy matters can be subject to impartial and objective resolution.

The Swedish Academy's supreme benefactor, H.M. King Carl XVI Gustaf will be informed of these decisions.

Anders Olsson
Permanent Secretary of the Swedish Academy
